Inspirations

The assignment topic given to us was global warming and/or recycling. I chose global warming as I kinda vaguely have an idea of what I am going to design. I love animals and bright colors, so I think that I will probably incorporate these things into my artwork. And bright colors instantly made me think of POP ART.

A week ago, our lecturer asked us to research about different art movements. And my group was one of the few who were chosen to present our findings to the entire class an hour later. Horrifying! :X  Anyways, the two art movements that I had chosen were Pop Art and Art Noveau as I mostly relate my style of artwork with these two movements. ♥ For this post, I'm gonna talk about Pop Art as it is my favorite. ;P

So, pop art is basically art that depicts objects or scenes from everyday life and employs techniques of commercial art and popular illustration. It is a visual art movement that emerged in the 1950s and  was popular in the 1960s in the United States.

Its oftentimes characterized by themes and techniques drawn from popular mass culture, such as television, movies, advertising and comic books. Food was a common theme, but so were household objects.

Pop artists liked to satirize or ridicule objects, sometimes enlarging those objects to gigantic proportions . These objects reflected mass culture and consumerism.
The movement was marked by clear lines, sharp paintwork and clear representations of symbols, objects and people commonly found in popular culture.

Some famous artistes that incorporated pop art into their work are:

Roy Lichtenstein

 Tom Wesselmann

And my personal favorite, Andy Warhol

And here are some of their works;

 Andy Warhol
“Campbell’s Soup”
1968

 Andy Warhol
“Sixteen Jackies”
1964

 Roy Lichtenstein
“Whaam!”
1963

 Roy Lichtenstein
“Hopeless”
1963

 Tom Wesselmann "Smoker number 1
 (Mouth number 12)" 1967

Tom Wesselmann
“Still Life #24”
1962

It's very clear that based on all the artworks above, the pop art style has :
  • Simple, crisp lines
  • Oversized images or objects
  • Often reflects  and  copies the styles seen in the media
  • Collages of popular images
  • Bright Colors
  • Some work  re-creates the same subject in several pieces or within the same piece
So, more or less I will base my artwork on Pop Art. Now, on to finish the sketches! ;)
